I got the water taxi from Te Anau at 8:30am to Brod Bay and walked up to Luxmore Hut, the track is in forest for about 3/4 of that section, there's some good views when the track comes out of the trees of the town and the mountains and all that jazz.
Bagged!
Near Luxmore hut are some caves, I didn't have a torch but went to have a look, I went down the steps and into the cave that delves diagonally into the earth, a little stream runs through it. I went as far as I could see and then got scared and went back out again.
Look how scary that is.
After the cave I walked back down the mountain which was now a lot steeper and had grown since I walked up it, plus someone had put invisible bricks in my bag. There are some very nice limestone cliffs near the top of the forest section which the trail goes underneath. Back at Brod Bay I walked the trail back to town, it passes across water control gates and the final stretch back to town took ages because I was tired and everything hurt. On the edge of town is a bird sanctuary.
Aren't they cute. Sturdy blue nibblers.
I was pooped when I got back to my room, 26km walked today which included a mountain so that's a fair walk. The next day I walked a different section of the track from Rainbow Reach to Motorua Hut at Shallow Bay and back, I drove to the carpark and walked from there. In the morning it rained on and off but the sun came out when I was on the track, parts of track had collapsed due to trees falling down and pulling the track away with them so there were some detours of the route. I was going to walk further up the track but it was cold in the beech forest and the hut was in sun with nice benches outside, so I sat there, ate my food and read my book, there were no sandfies because there was a breeze. After a bit I went to the shore of Shallow bay and laid down on the shore, the shingle was nice and warm and I fell asleep and had some micro dreams about something. I was probably there about half an hour or more, oh it was nice and warm.
Motorua Hut in the sun, nice benches outside.
It was too comfortable and I thought I could fall asleep there for hours so got up and made my back back to Rainbow Reach.
